Death, memory and the internet
Life is strange, death can catch you at the most unexpected times. You never know what post or message might be your last (unless you're deliberately planning to say goodbye, depending on the situation). All that is left is an account without an owner. And that's the way it will be until the services are shut down or the accounts are deleted due to inactivity or hacking. But if you're lucky, your accounts might be archived by someone in some way.
I like to search Tumblr for blogs that haven't posted in years. If I'm lucky, I might find something interesting on other older sites! (That's even more fun!). The longer the better. It's like getting a snapshot of a certain period of the internet and a person's life. Sure, I'll probably never know them, but at least I can point to their posts, comments, messages, or whatever and say, "Hey, they liked this and they didn't like that". Pretty neat if you ask me. It's funny how often I think about these random internet people. Kind of goes with the whole "you're not dead as long as you're remembered" thing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that everyone who stopped being active is dead! They may have abandoned their accounts for any number of reasons. But statistically speaking, some of those people may actually be dead.
It makes me wonder what will happen to me when I finally join this ever-growing Internet graveyard. Someone will probably stumble across my accounts this way, too. The thought of it is both comforting and terrifying. What would they think of me?
