The World Ends with You
What is TWEWY?
The World Ends with You or It's a Wonderful World in Japan is an action-rpg for the Nintendo DS developed by Square Enix and Jupiter and released in 2007/8. The character designs were created by Gen Kobayashi and Tetsuya Nomura. The story was mainly written by Sachie Hirano. It revolves around the asocial 15-year old Neku Sakubara who is forced to fight to return from the dead by participating in the Reapers's Game. A game where you and your partner have to complete daily missions over the course of the week in order not to be erased from existence. And as the story goes shit hits the fan in Shibuya and Neku learns about the true purpose of the Reapers's game.
Why do i love this game?
God, I have to mention TWEWY's OST. It fucking slaps. The OST was composed by Takeharu Ishimoto. You might know him as the composer of Crisis Core. He also has a band that is actually named after the in-game band (Def Märch). They mostly play and rearrange music from Ishimoto's works, so of course they have some TWEWY songs. They only have one album. Give them a listen. Or don't. I'm not your mom. (Not TWEWY-related but i really like the version of Price of Freedom from this album)
TWEWY's characters are very memorable and charming. From Neku and his partners to the Reapers and even the NPCs. They all have their own quirks. The most obvious example of this would be Sho Minamimoto. He's one of the Reapers and the Game Master during the second week. At one point one of the characters refers to him as "the little math fetishist" and...it's not like they are wrong. The guy clearly loves math and makes it everybody's problem. Truly the guy ever.

Sho flexes his pi number knowledge
Buuuuut he's actually not my favorite character (though he comes pretty close). My favorite character is definitely Daisukenojo "Beat" Bito . One of Neku's partners and the older brother of Rhyme. He's a "softie pretending to be a tough guy" type of character. Beat's whole deal with his parents and Rhyme makes me sad :(
I love this sk8er boi, i think he's very very neat.

look at him!!
The game can be very funny. I found myself laughing outloud at some jokes. And the secret reports that you unlock by 100%-ing the game are...interesting.
I like the gameplay of the game. The whole thing with brands in shibuya was cool. The combat was overwhelming at first, but I got used to it. I actually really liked grinding in this game. Especially since the game can be pretty flexible with its difficulty. Some fights were pain in the ass though. I can't deny it.
Everything about TWEWY screams 00s. I love it. I couldn't play the game at the time of its original release because I was a child from a small town who also didn't know English at the time. i also didn't have a DS. And my parents probably wouldn't buy it for me anyway. Although i have vague memories of seeing a picture of Neku on someone's Nokia? I dunno, could be false memories or something. I'm glad i played it though! It became one of my favorite games. TWEWY captivated me from the moment I booted up the game and it kept me hooked until the very end.
